HOUSTON 2 GALVESTON & BACK #26 – SPRING EDITION
This is a bike ride from Downtown Houston to the Galveston Seawall and back to Houston. Wheels down at 6:30am sharp.
TF Cycling will have snacks and refreshments for us once we make it to Galveston Island. We ask that you please make a $5 or more donation at the midstop. Your donation will go towards their 2019 MS150 fundraiser.
THE CAUSEWAY & I45:
At no point will you ever be on HWY 45 except the Galveston Causeway shoulder. The shoulder on the causeway is 12′ wide. DO NOT ride in the traffic lane on the causeway. Stay on the shoulder.
PACE & GROUPS:
Choose a group that fits your ability. Remember it’s 100+ miles round trip so choose wisely. Below is a ballpark of what to expect. You will likely find yourself in smaller pockets on the return.
There will be 1 stop along each direction and a Featured Mid-stop (3 official stops). If you or the pack you’re in need an additional stop, please make that call. Most will arrive at the mid-stop in Galveston between 9- 10am. If you aren’t in the blazing fast lead pack, make an effort to keep pockets of people together.
We have seen road bikes, mountain bikes, fat bikes, fixed gear bikes and even BMX bikes complete this ride. It’s recommended that you use your faster bikes. Usually mountain bikes etc. hit the island a good 1-2 hours behind the main groups. It’s safer to bring a faster bike as you will be in a cluster of other cyclists.
SAG & MECHANICALS:
Please have a contingency plan for someone to pick you up if your bike disintegrates during the ride and you cannot continue. Typically we have some volunteer SAG. If you have a mechanical they may assist you but there are no guarantees. If you have a major equipment fail in the first 10 miles, please find your own way home. We have limited volunteer SAG and it is intended for mechanical or fatigue issues closer to Galveston.
Helmets are required. Safety is paramount. Do not bring sound systems or headphones. Serious focus is required in pace lines. We audible commands and upcoming hazards.
